eBook exploration

iBook, wow! I want one. I believe we have found the answer to reading disengagement. The only problem is affordability. Don't be discouraged. We have the good old faithful PowerPoint which will allow us to create our lesson specific electronic books. A Google search will also provide us with lots of free eBooks we can download to our desk tops or laptops.

I must admit, I was really impressed by the simplicity and creativity of using PowerPoint to create an eBook. As an instructional tool these electronic books can aid in every aspect of reading development. Most importantly, teachers can design eBooks to address the specific needs of students. Electronic books can be designed in the dialect of the student and another in the second language, with the same content, to help in second language acquisition. It could be a good way to get our Creole speaking students to better understand how past tense is used in Standard English. ( Don't steal this guys, already completed)

Students would be so taken by the sheer interactivity of their eBooks, they may not realize they are learning important concepts. Isn't that what good teaching strategies are supposed to do? We will be 'showing students that there are many forms and reasons for reading." (Alvermann, 2001) Since our male students are more resistant to reading in the traditional way, think about the possibilities of having them create their own eBook.

Check out my eBook below. I did the illustrations myself!

  1. Donna, I too am fascinate by the eBooks and especially so by the possibilities for classroom created eBooks.Your idea for using it to teach the Standard alongside the Trinidad Creole or any such combination is quite innovative.I have been exploring the use of the e-books to teach writing and I agree the scope is endless ,any genre, level and a definite motivational tool.

  2. Yes Donna I agree with you. It was really simple to do. It is a very motivating tool and almost all computers carry Microsoft Power Point. think about how we can let our students' creative juices run. What I like most about it is that as you rightly stated the students may not or will not even realize that they are learning important concepts.

Because believe it or not student who are under achieving like to know that their work is good and this is a good tool to use for underachievers. They will sit for the entire period and get some work done and before they know it the period will be up and they will be begging for extra time to complete what they were doing and the good thing about the software it has spell check, so it can also teach vocabulary.

I hope to see you trying it out in your classroom Donna, after all you are an English teacher. Please use it and see if you can get the attention of some of our students. They need all the intervention that they can get.

  4. I too was amazed by eBooks being an avid reader myself. Just think about it, if we as adults are so taken by this technological tool, imagine how our students will react to them.
I think for the students, the best thing about eBooks will be the change from the monotony of using bound books. Don’t misinterpret me, please. I love my bound books. In fact I have sentimental attachment to most of my books. But the dynamism of learning makes it imperative that we vary our approach to teaching reading and I believe that eBooks will enhance students reading experience rather than detract them.
EBooks can be used to teach fluency, comprehension, vocabulary and all the other reading components. In literature, it can enhance the learning of different genres. Also, with the thrust of literacy efforts by many administrators, eBooks can be used across the curriculum in different subject areas.
I also agree with the economical use of Microsoft PowerPoint because let’s be realistic how many principals are going to invest in eBooks. All in all it’s not about having eBooks, it’s about incorporating what the technology offers into our teaching strategies to enable our students to thrive in this digital world.
    P.S.
I love your eBook. It is simple but effective. Were the illustrations done locally? Just kidding, though you may have to copyright them.
After completing my assignments,I’ll finish mine and post it. So you can check it out after the August 13th.

  5. Hi Donna
Even though I would have liked to comment on another of your many posts I couldn't help but pause and reflect at this juncture. You have done an excellent job with this eBook. Not only is the eBook well crafted but the manner in which you have decided to utilize it in the classroom is astonishing.
I know you have a penchant for our boys so I would like to share with you a fantastic site with eBooks for our boys and girls. We have Nikeisha to thank for locating this site. The eBooks there may give yours just an 'infinitesimal' competition.(lol)
